Open Data Africa is a data accessibility initiative under the AI Made in Africa program. Our mission is to empower African businesses, researchers, and AI innovators by making high-quality, openly licensed datasets easily discoverable and usable. We believe that access to open and locally relevant data is a foundational step toward accelerating innovation, inclusive economic development, and responsible AI in Africa. Through this project, we aim to bridge data gaps and promote responsible data governance across sectors like health, agriculture, environment, and digital economy.

About the “AI Made in Africa” Initiative
AI Made in Africa is a continental program supported by the GIZ African Union Office. The initiative focuses on strengthening Africa’s AI ecosystem through policy development, enhanced data accessibility and open datasets, AI business surveys, continental and regional policy dialogues, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.
The program supports African startups, researchers, governments and private sector innovators to advance AI sovereignty while championing responsible, inclusive, and locally relevant open AI innovations and open datasets that address continental priorities in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, education, climate action, and sustainable economic development.
